Hydropower
• Hydropower is a type of renewable energy that extracts energy from the power of moving water. Water energy can be used in mechanics and electricity generation. Now, the energy of falling water is mainly used in the world, for which dams are built and hydroelectric power plants are installed nearby.
Operating principle
• When a dam is built, the water level is higher on one side and lower on the other. A stream of falling water is formed, turning turbines, and these are generators that produce electricity. Hydroelectric plants are especially suitable for building in mountains, where the slope of the rivers is high.
Usage in the world
• About 25% of water energy resources are used in the world. China, Brazil, Russia and Canada have its great potential. Globally, hydropower produces about 7% of electricity and this share is increasing. There are countries where all or most of the energy is produced by hydropower plants (Paraguay 100%, Norway 96%, Brazil 86%). It is estimated that using all available flowing water resources could produce as much as 40% of the world's electricity.
